History of MGM Grand Atlantic City
MGMMirage's relationship with Atlantic City goes back to the days before MGM took control of Steve Wynn's Mirage Resorts in 1998. Steve Wynn had been planning on returning to Atlantic City (he built the Golden Nugget AC, which is now the AC Hilton) with a Frank Gehry designed resort in the marina district, Le Jardin, that had planned on opening in 2001. This, however was scrapped when MGM took over Mirage Resorts. Simultaneously, MGM had designed an MGM Grand that was to be built on the site where Revel is being built. This plan was scrapped when MGM couldn't get all of the real estate puzzle pieces to come together.
At the turn of 2000, MGMMirage and Boyd Gaming partnered to build Borgata on a chunk of the "Le Jardin" site. The remainding 72 acres of the land sat dormant until fall 2007 when MGMMirage announced that they would begin construction of the US$5B MGM Grand Atlantic City in 2008. MGM Grand Atlantic City is expected to open in 2012.
